While I have a fair few other articles I could be writing, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity
Haunted Mansion, a favourite attraction of mine (in fact I could spend a whole day in New Orleans Square and not leave that area), today turns 50
If Walt had got his way, the attraction would have been a lot older than that. From the haunted house walk through, to the Museum of the Weird incarnation, up to the doom buggy vehicle transportation that would eventually be completed, the Mansion has always captivated me
Disney Legends worked to make this attraction what it is today. Imagineers Harper Goff, Ken Anderson, Yale Gracey, X Atencio, Rolly Crump, Marc Davis and Bob Gurr all had a hand in creating what I would consider a masterpiece in theme park engineering.
The seasonal overlay of Haunted Mansion Holiday was also a stroke of genius. Incorporating Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas gives you another reason to hop on board a Doom Buggy during the Halloween and Christmas seasons at Disneyland.
Not only that, it has inspired similar attractions around the Disney Parks across the globe, The Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World, Mystic Manor at Hong Kong Disneyland and Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris.
So next time you meet any Hitch Hiking Ghosts trying to make you the 1000th happy haunt, remember to take your death certificate.
